Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This lot features two single-shot shotguns, each with its own distinct characteristics and historical context. The first, a Savage Arms Corporation Model 107B, showcases classic design elements of mid-20th-century American firearms. Chambered in 20 gauge with a 2 ¾" chamber, this shotgun has a blue finish and a 28" barrel, providing a balance of durability and performance. Its bead front sight aids in quick target acquisition. The shotgun's uncheckered hardwood pistol grip stock and forearm, held together with black electrical tape, suggest some DIY repairs or modifications. Markings include “MODEL 107B” on the right side of the receiver, “SELECTED FORGED STEEL” on the right side of the barrel, and “STEVENS / SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION / CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS U.S.A.” on the left side of the receiver. Additionally, the left side of the barrel is marked “PROOF TESTED - 20 GAUGE / -2 ¾ INCH CHAMBER-,” indicating its proof testing and chamber specifications.
The second shotgun, branded as Cannon Breech, exhibits a more antiquated aesthetic. This 12-gauge shotgun features a 30" barrel and a blue finish that has aged to a brown patina, with a nickel-plated receiver that adds a touch of distinction. The bead front sight remains, though the stock and forearm are uncheckered hardwood, showing signs of damage and missing components such as the buttplate and grip cap. The markings on the left side of the receiver and the top of the barrel are simply “Cannon Breech,” reflecting the trade brand name and suggesting a more basic or generic manufacturing origin. While differing in appearance and condition, both shotguns offer a glimpse into their respective eras' design and craftsmanship, making them notable additions for collectors or enthusiasts interested in restoring single-shot shotguns.
