Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Combat Government in a Series 70 guise was Colt’s factory answer for shooters who wanted a more performance-oriented Government 1911 without stepping all the way up to a full Gold Cup or custom shop build. Made to bridge the gap between plain, service-style Government models and competition/tactical pistols, the Combat Government kept the Series 70’s traditional firing system (no Series-80 firing-pin block) and focused on shootability — crisper trigger breaks, tighter barrel/bushing fit, and practical sighting and control improvements that make it faster and more accurate in real use. Because it’s Series 70, many shooters prize its trigger feel and simpler, purist internals that favor a clean, consistent single-stage break. Compared with a plain Government Model, a Series-70 Combat Government typically shows factory attention to the lockup and feed system (often National-Match or match-profile barrels, polished throats and tuned feed ramps), upgraded sights and ergonomics, and better external furniture. Those changes make the Combat Government a more capable duty/competition pistol straight from the factory while retaining the classic Series-70 character collectors and shooters value: purer trigger dynamics, straightforward internals, and a traditional 1911 silhouette with performance-minded refinements.
