Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this high-quality bolt-action rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Schultz & Larsen M65DL!

The Model 65 succeeded the earlier Model 54J, retaining the same basic action but incorporating several key improvements, most notably the transition to a cock-on-opening bolt design, which was favored for its smoother and more efficient operation. Additional refinements included changes to the stock and overall finish, enhancing both function and aesthetics. Introduced in 1959, the Model 65 was soon offered in powerful chamberings like the .308 and .358 Norma Magnum, with rifles in those calibers available by 1960. Production continued until 1966, with a total of 4,500 units made—an output that Schultz & Larsen considered a strong success given their emphasis on precision craftsmanship and limited, high-quality manufacturing.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Schultz & Larson M65DL chambered in .308 Norma Magnum represents a blend of Scandinavian precision engineering and classic magnum performance. Built in Denmark by Schultz & Larson—renowned for producing high-quality sporting rifles—the M65DL features a robust bolt-action system with rear-locking lugs, a hallmark of the company’s strong and reliable design heritage. The DL ("De Luxe") variant further elevates this platform with select-grade walnut stocks, rosewood fore-end and grip caps, and fine checkering, making it as visually refined as it is mechanically sound. The rifle typically includes a cold hammer-forged barrel, steel claw mounts for optics, and a smooth, clean-breaking trigger. These rifles are known for exceptional accuracy, durability, and meticulous fit and finish, reflecting Schultz & Larson’s commitment to quality over quantity.

Chambered in the .308 Norma Magnum, the M65DL offers powerful, long-range ballistics suitable for large game hunting. The .308 Norma Magnum was introduced in the 1960s as a high-performance cartridge based on a shortened .300 H&H Magnum case, delivering ballistics comparable to the .300 Winchester Magnum while fitting into a standard-length action. Though factory ammunition is now relatively scarce, handloaders value the cartridge for its efficiency and ability to push heavy bullets with flat trajectories. When combined with the M65DL’s rigid action and quality barrel, this chambering can yield impressive accuracy, making the rifle well-suited for hunters targeting elk, moose, or African plains game. As both a functional field rifle and a collectible firearm, the Schultz & Larson M65DL in .308 Norma Magnum stands out for its combination of craftsmanship, heritage, and magnum-level performance.
