Introduced in 1992 as an upgrade to the P228, the SIG Sauer P229 quickly became a popular choice for both duty and concealed carry. Unlike its predecessors, the P229 was designed to accommodate more powerful rounds like the .357 SIG and .40 S&W, which the P228 couldn't handle due to its lighter slide. Moreover, with conversion barrels, owners can transform a P229 (or its larger counterpart, the P226) from .40 S&W/.357 SIG to 9mm caliber, enhancing its adaptability in different shooting contexts.
SIG Sauer has continued to refine the P229 over the years, adopting enhancements like the Double Action Kellerman (DAK) system—a Double Action Only (DAO) setup with a lighter trigger pull.
