Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Smith & Wesson began developing a series of 10mm pistols in 1990 after the introduction of their third-generation pistol line, building these new models on the frame of the Model 4506. The first production pistol, the Model 1006, was manufactured in February 1990, followed by a range of other models, including the 1026, 1046, 1066, 1076, and 1086. The factory designated the starting serial number for this series as TEN0000, with production beginning at TEP1012. The 10mm series was initially popular, but production ceased in 1995 after a relatively short run, except for special orders. A key model in this series was the Model 1076, which became the standard issue handgun for the FBI. The 1076 featured a SIG-style frame-mounted decocker, which replaced the slide-mounted decocker/safety common in other Smith & Wesson models. It was a traditional double-action (DA/SA) design with a 9-round magazine capacity, although some extended magazines were reportedly used by the FBI. Initially, the FBI ordered 10,000 Model 1076 pistols, but after quality control issues, only 2,500 pistols were accepted following rework. The Kentucky State Police also adopted the Model 1076, issuing it to all officers for more than a decade.

Despite the relatively short production run and the eventual decline of 10mm pistols in law enforcement, the Smith & Wesson 10xx series remains fondly remembered. For many, these pistols evoke nostalgia, particularly in the context of popular culture, such as the association with Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice, who famously carried a Bren Ten. Though the 10mm cartridge has faded from mainstream law enforcement use, several manufacturers, including Glock and SIG Sauer, still offer 10mm pistols today, and Gray Guns Inc. provides conversion kits for SIG P220 models. Despite the challenges and the eventual decline of 10mm pistols in law enforcement, the Smith & Wesson 10xx series was well-built and earned a reputation for solid, reliable service across multiple agencies.
