Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 12 is a .38 Special revolver built on the medium-sized K-frame. It is a lightweight variant of the Model 10 (also known as the Military & Police), featuring an aluminum alloy frame. Produced from 1952 until 1986, the Model 12 was available in two configurations: a two-inch barrel version weighing 17 ounces and a four-inch barrel version at 19 ounces. Early models did indeed use an aluminum cylinder in addition to the frame. In 1953, Smith & Wesson introduced a civilian version of the M13 known as the Military & Police Airweight, which was later rebranded in 1957 as the Model 12 Airweight. Initially, this model featured both an aluminum cylinder and frame, resulting in a weight of just 14.5 ounces. However, due to concerns over the strength of the aluminum cylinder under repeated use with standard .38 Special cartridges, Smith & Wesson transitioned to using steel cylinders in all new production Airweight revolvers in 1954, which increased the weight to 18 ounces.
