Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 27-5 is a distinguished iteration of the legendary N-frame .357 Magnum revolver, a direct descendant of the original Registered Magnum introduced in 1935. The 27-5, produced beginning in the late 1980s, retained the premium fit, finish, and accuracy that made the Model 27 famous, often featuring a highly polished blue finish and finely checkered topstrap and rib. Offered in various barrel lengths, it was built to handle the full power of the .357 Magnum cartridge with ease, while delivering the refined craftsmanship that appealed to both law enforcement professionals and discerning shooters. As with earlier Model 27s, the -5 variant maintained S&W’s reputation for exceptional trigger quality, with smooth double-action operation and a crisp single-action break. The revolver’s robust N-frame construction provided excellent durability, and its classic target stocks, adjustable rear sight, and wide target hammer and trigger enhanced both handling and precision. While the -5 introduced some minor design updates, it still reflected the traditional build quality of pre-lock Smith & Wessons, a trait increasingly valued by collectors today. For enthusiasts, the Model 27-5 represents a bridge between the classic hand-fitted revolvers of Smith & Wesson’s golden era and the more modern manufacturing processes of the 1990s. Its association with the storied history of the .357 Magnum, coupled with its elegant presentation and mechanical excellence, ensures its place as both a capable shooter and a desirable collectible for revolver aficionados.
