The Model 625-2 "Bowling Pin Revolver" was a popular firearm produced by Smith & Wesson. This revolver was chambered in .45 ACP, and it featured a 5" full lug barrel. It was a limited edition model that was introduced in 1988 and discontinued in 1989. The 625-2 "Bowling Pin Revolver" was so named because it was specifically designed for use in bowling pin shooting competitions. The revolver was marked with "45MODEL OF 1988" on the barrel, and a total of 5,708 units were produced during its brief production run. The revolver's unique design and limited availability have made it a highly sought-after collectible among firearm enthusiasts.
When comparing a Model of 1988 and a Model of 1989 specimen side by side, we observe a few differences: the 1988 model has roll-stamped barrel markings while the 1989 model has etched markings; the 1988 model has a ramp front sight, while the 1989 model has a Patridge sight. Other than these differences and the markings, they look nearly identical.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the 1980s, Smith & Wesson continued producing the .45 ACP Model 25 and eventually introduced a stainless version called the Model 625. The gun was designed to be ideal for bowling pin shooting, with its 5" full-underlug barrel that minimized muzzle flip from the .45 cartridge. However, the Model 625 had several unique features that made it an oddity and a collector's item.
Firstly, there was never a plain 625 or 625-1 model. The first guns released were designated as "625-2", and subsequent models had incremental engineering changes. Secondly, it was unusual for a 5" gun at the time to have a round-butt frame, a feature typically found only on short-barreled N-frames. The earliest models of the 625 had the barrel roll marked "Model of 1988" (even though they were made in 1989) and ramp front sights, but this was quickly changed to a laser-etched "Model of 1989" and a partridge-type front sight blade. Finally, unlike other stainless guns by Smith & Wesson that had brushed finishes, the 625 had a soft matte bead-blast finish.
