Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless or Smith & Wesson New Departure (nicknamed by collectors as the Lemon Squeezer) is a double-action revolver that was produced from 1887 to 1940 by Smith & Wesson. Based on the Smith & Wesson Model 2 double-action design, the revolver incorporated an internal hammer and an external grip safety on its back-strap. It was chambered in .32 S&W and .38 S&W calibers; these revolvers were discontinued prior to World War II, being eclipsed by the stronger hand ejector models.

The Smith & Wesson .32 double-action 4th Model revolver features a 5-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of .92". A 3-inch barrel length are common, with 6-inch somewhat scarce and 8-inch or 10-inch quite rare. Changes are the rounded-rear trigger guard replacing the reverse curved trigger guard. The standard finish is blue or nickel. Pinned round blade front sight with a notch cut into the barrel latch for a rear sight. Top-break action with auto extraction of spent shells. The side plate on the frame's left side is held in place with one screw. Serial numbers range from 43406 to about 282999. Roughly 239,600 were manufactured circa 1883-1909.
