Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 – 5th Change is a fine example of early 20th-century revolver engineering, offering both historical value and mechanical refinement. Chambered in .32 S&W Long, this revolver features a 6-inch pinned barrel, giving it a sleek and balanced profile while aiding in improved accuracy and handling. The nickel finish adds a layer of durability and period-correct elegance, complementing the revolver’s overall aesthetic. Topping off its visual appeal are genuine pearl grips adorned with Smith & Wesson medallions, a touch that enhances its collectibility and vintage charm. The pistol is configured with a double/single-action mechanism, giving the shooter flexibility between deliberate single-action precision and rapid double-action fire.

Mechanically, the 5th Change—produced from approximately 1910 to 1917—introduces key updates that reflect Smith & Wesson’s continuous pursuit of functional improvement. One significant internal revision, based on the 1909 patent, was a redesign of the lockwork to allow the hammer to be thrown off its point rather than the sear during double-action operation. The rebound slide was modified to shorten its travel, and the extractor star now utilized a two-pin alignment system, improving cylinder function and alignment. The extractor rod knob was made non-removable, enhancing reliability under extended use. Sight-wise, the revolver features a fixed blade front and frame-notched rear, standard for service and utility revolvers of the era. Depending on production timing, the revolver may bear a small S&W logo on the frame or, in later examples, a large logo on the right sideplate—some units even lack a logo entirely, adding a layer of intrigue for collectors. Altogether, the Model of 1903 – 5th Change is a distinguished revolver that embodies both the transitional design elements of early 20th-century firearms and Smith & Wesson’s enduring legacy in revolver craftsmanship.
