Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .32 Safety Hammerless 1st Model is a double-action-only top-break revolver featuring a five-shot fluted cylinder measuring approximately 0.95" in length. Standard barrel lengths were 3" and 3 1/2" (the latter being most common), with 2" and 6" barrels produced in far smaller numbers. A defining feature of the 1st Model is its push-down barrel latch, along with the characteristic grip-safety located on the backstrap. The revolver was offered in either nickel finish or the scarcer blue finish, and typically fitted with checkered black hard-rubber grips bearing the S&W monogram. Additional features include a rounded trigger guard, a fully enclosed hammer, a pinned round-blade front sight, and a rear sight formed as a raised portion of the barrel catch. Two screws secure the left side frame plate. Around serial number 53,000, the safety lever spring was revised from a flat spring to a coiled type. Serial numbers appear on the butt, cylinder, and barrel. The 1st Model was produced from serial number 1 through 91,417, with all 91,417 manufactured circa 1888–1902.
