Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1950, the .357 Magnum underwent a significant upgrade with the introduction of the short-throw hammer, which reduced the distance the hammer traveled for faster and smoother operation. This change, aimed at enhancing the revolver's performance, marked a key improvement in the evolution of the model. The .357 Magnum “Pre-Model 27” preceded the Model 27 and was offered with two finish options: the standard blue finish and the rarer nickel finish. The nickel finish was a premium option, often sought by collectors and enthusiasts due to its distinctive appearance and durability. The Pre-Model 27 featured a number of high-quality components. It was equipped with standard target sights, which were ideal for precision shooting, and had checkered walnut grips with the iconic S&W inlaid medallions, providing both an aesthetic appeal and a secure, comfortable hold. The revolver’s top strap was finely checkered, matching the checkered barrel rib, which helped reduce glare and improve sight alignment. The fore strap and backstrap were also grooved, adding to the gun’s ergonomic design and grip stability.

These features were hallmarks of Smith & Wesson's commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail. Around 1954, Smith & Wesson introduced target stocks as an available option for the Pre-Model 27, providing an even more refined grip designed specifically for competitive shooting and precision control. The revolver was offered with barrel lengths that varied to suit different needs and preferences, including 3 1/2", 5", 6", 6 1/2", and 8 3/8" lengths. These barrels were mounted on the five-screw N-frame, which was known for its strength and durability, making the revolver suitable for handling the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge. The serial numbering system for the Pre-27 revolvers used the “S” prefix, which continued until 1969. After that year, the serial numbering system was changed, and the “S” prefix was replaced by the “N” prefix to designate later models. In 1956, Smith & Wesson made a significant change to the design: the upper side plate screw was eliminated in the manufacturing process.

This modification began at approximately serial number S172000, streamlining the revolver’s design and reducing the number of parts. In 1957, the .357 Magnum was officially rebranded as the Model 27, marking the transition to a more standardized and mass-produced version of the original Pre-Model 27. While the Model 27 retained many of the signature features of the Pre-27, including its powerful performance and customizable options, it was now positioned as the flagship revolver in Smith & Wesson’s lineup, cementing its reputation as one of the finest revolvers ever made.
