Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Many hundreds of thousands of S&W Model 1905 4th Change M&P revolvers were produced for the war effort from 1940 -1945. Guns produced for the British Commonwealth were in cal. 38 S&W (38-200), and those for the United States Armed Forces, Defense Supplies Corporation contracts, and Civilian/Police were in cal. 38 S&W Special. These can be found with many markings, barrel lengths, grip styles, metal finishes, post-war rebuild, and cylinder conversion configurations - too many to cover without writing a book.
But there was a time in production (1940 - early 1942) when the revolvers followed the standard Model 1905 serial number range of around 670,000 to 999,999 before the V-prefix or "Victory" serials began. These are generally referred to as the "Pre-Victory" model and are identified by serial number and the signature lanyard post and ring. Most of the Pre-Victory production went overseas, but a limited number stayed Stateside for Civilian, Police, or Defense Contract use.
