Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 38/44 was introduced on 4/1/1930 with a total of 11,111 manufactured before WWII interrupted the production. It was then reintroduced after WWII with improved rebound slide actuated hammer block. All post war guns have the prefix "S" accompanying the serial number. In 1948 the 38/44 Heavy Duty was further improved to incorporate the now familiar S&W "short action" and remained unchanged until the model was discontinued in 1966. Total post-war production was 20,604 revolvers. In 1957 when model numbers were assigned to various S&W revolvers, the 38/44 Heavy Duty became known as the Model 20. This model is built on S&W Heavy "N" Frame which was also the .44 Military frame.
According to a note card from the original owner that is pictured, this revolver was purchased new from Foley Bros. in Houston in January of 1952 and had less that 1 box of shells fired through it.
