Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .38/44 Heavy Duty Transition, also known as the postwar transitional model, is a notable revolver from the immediate post-World War II era, reintroduced in June 1946. Chambered for .38 S&W Special, this double-action revolver is built on the square butt N frame with five screws and features barrel lengths of 4 inches or 5 inches, with the 6-1/2-inch variant being particularly rare. It carries an S serial prefix starting around S62496. It incorporates a new slide action hammer block for enhanced safety. By 1948, at approximately serial number S72300, a short throw hammer was introduced, marking a further refinement. The revolver features a 1/10-inch forged round blade front sight and a square notch rear sight with a polished blue or nickel finish. The 6-shot fluted cylinder has a nominal length of 1.57 inches, and the extractor rod is equipped with a knob that gradually diminishes in diameter over production, ending with a knurled end. Notably, the postwar model lacks the spring-loaded locking ball bearing or plunger in the yoke, distinguishing it from its predecessors. Most postwar transitional models are characterized by long cocking action hammers and triggers, checked Magna-style diamond walnut grips, and a shrouded extractor rod. Some early postwar examples even feature prewar Magnum barrels with checkered ribs. The "Made in U.S.A." marking is present in early models, with the Four Line address appearing closer to 1950, and a significant S&W trademark typically adorns the side plate. Approximately 9,000 of these revolvers were manufactured, with serial numbers ranging from S62496 to S75206, from 1946 to 1950.
