Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .38 Double-Action 3rd Model (manufactured from 1884 to 1895) is a significant example of late 19th-century revolver engineering. Chambered in .38 S&W, this double-action revolver features a 5-shot fluted cylinder and a top-break action, which was innovative for its time, allowing users to easily eject spent cartridges and reload the revolver in a quick and efficient manner. The .38 S&W caliber provided a balance between power and recoil, making it a practical choice for self-defense, law enforcement, and even military use. The revolver’s design includes a pinned round blade front sight and a notched rear sight integrated into the top latch of the frame, offering simple and effective sighting for users. Its mechanical features also include full and half-cock safety notches on the hammer and a sideplate on the left side of the frame, held in place by a single screw, which was a hallmark of Smith & Wesson's quality construction.

Aesthetically, the Model 3rd features a nickel finish, which not only enhanced its durability but also gave it a distinctive and attractive appearance compared to the more common blued finishes of the time. The revolver is equipped with checkered black hard rubber grips adorned with the S&W monogram, providing both a secure and comfortable hold. The recurve trigger guard and the elimination of the cylinder groove make this revolver stand out as a fine example of classic Smith & Wesson craftsmanship. With a serial number range from 119001 to 322700 and approximately 203,700 firearms manufactured, this revolver is highly collectible, especially in good condition with the nickel finish. Its historical significance, combined with its distinctive features, makes it a coveted piece for firearms collectors and enthusiasts.
