Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th Change, is a classic example of early 20th-century American revolver design and engineering. Built on the sturdy K-frame, this double/single-action revolver is chambered in .38 S&W Special and features a 6-inch barrel with a nickel finish, giving it both aesthetic appeal and added protection against corrosion. This model, part of the 4th Change production series, includes a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56 inches and is fitted with a fixed blade front sight and a frame notch rear sight, standard for service-grade revolvers of the era. While both round and square butt configurations were produced, the square butt was more common. The grips are checkered walnut with the traditional gold S&W medallions, and include the distinctive diamond pattern around the grip screw escutcheon, a feature that adds both function and vintage character.

The 4th Change variant brought primarily internal improvements over the previous generation, the most notable being the addition of a hammer block safety mechanism. This small but significant change involved a spring-loaded hammer block located in the sideplate, which moves aside only when the trigger is pulled—offering added protection against accidental discharge. The revolver is equipped with a smooth .265" wide trigger and a matching .265" checkered hammer, consistent with the service configuration. Serial numbers on these revolvers can be found on the butt, cylinder face, yoke, and barrel flat, and heat-treated cylinders began appearing around serial number 316648. The frame typically bears the “Made in U.S.A.” stamp on the right side and may or may not feature the S&W trademark, depending on the exact production period. With production beginning around 1915 and continuing through 1942, approximately 758,000 of these revolvers were made, making the Model of 1905, 4th Change one of the most significant and widely used service revolvers in U.S. history. Its robust design, smooth handling, and historical pedigree continue to make it a prized piece among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
