Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model is a double-action revolver chambered in .38 S&W, distinguished by its backstrap safety. It features a 5-shot, fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.21 inches and is available in various barrel lengths: 2-inch (often referred to as a "Bicycle gun" and relatively scarce), 3 1/4-inch, 4-inch, 5-inch, or 6-inch. The top rib is marked with "Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A," though some models may have the markings reversed. Notably, a limited number were produced with 1.5-inch barrels, some of which were made for banking institutions. The revolver can be found with checkered hard rubber or walnut grips, with or without S&W monograms on the round butt frame. It comes in blue or nickel finishes, with the nickel models featuring a blue trigger guard, a case-colored smooth trigger, and a blue barrel latch. The right side of the barrel is marked "SMITH & WESSON," while the left side reads ".38 S.& W. CTG," though this placement can occasionally be reversed. Early models may lack these markings and the "Made in USA" stamp located above the trigger guard on the frame’s right side. Some 5th Model revolvers are observed with the pinned front sight from the 4th Model, and the left side of the frame features a sideplate secured by two screws. The front sight is either forged with the barrel or pinned, depending on the barrel length, while the rear sight is a notch cut into a raised section of the barrel catch. Serial numbers range from 220000 to approximately 261493, with an estimated 41,500 units manufactured between 1907 and 1940.
Return Policy:
We gladly offer a 3 day unfired inspection policy from the time that the firearm is delivered to your FFL. Refunds are available for all qualifying orders.
