The Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 is a refined variant of S&W’s groundbreaking Model 39, the first U.S.-designed double-action semi-automatic pistol adopted for law enforcement and civilian markets. Introduced in the 1950s and improved as the Model 39-2 by the early 1970s, it was chambered in 9mm Luger and featured a single-stack 8-round magazine, aluminum alloy frame, and a nickel carbon steel slide. What set the Model 39 apart from many of its contemporaries was its double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger system, which allowed for a safer and quicker first shot without manual cocking—an innovation inspired by German Walther designs but executed with American engineering.
