Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 39 is a semi-automatic pistol originally developed for the U.S. Army's service pistol trials in 1954. Although the Army ultimately abandoned its search for a new pistol, the Model 39 was released to the civilian market in 1955, becoming Smith & Wesson's first-generation semi-automatic pistol. The Model 39-2, introduced in the early 1970s, refined the original design with improved components and enhanced reliability. This double/single-action (DA/SA) pistol offers a smooth double-action trigger pull for the first shot, followed by a light, crisp single-action pull for subsequent shots, providing versatility in various shooting scenarios. The Model 39-2 comes equipped with a serrated ramp front sight and an adjustable micrometer click rear sight, allowing for precise aiming and accuracy. The checkered wood grips are inlaid with the classic Smith & Wesson medallions, adding a touch of elegance to the pistol’s overall appearance.

A modified version of the Model 39, with a wider grip frame to accommodate a 14-round magazine, saw limited use with Naval Special Warfare units during the Vietnam War. This variant, known as the Mk 22 Mod 0, was issued to officers-in-charge (OICs) of MST-2 detachments and became famously known as the "hush puppy" when used by SEAL teams. This modified Model 39 played an important role as a sidearm for special operations during conflicts.
