The Smith & Wesson Model 39 was originally developed for the 1954 US Army pistol trials. However, it was not selected for extensive military service, but was adopted for limited use by Naval Special Warfare during Vietnam. The design was then introduced into the civilian market. In 1989, the 3900 series, which was the third generation of the design, was produced. Production of this series ceased in the 90s, and was replaced by the 5900 series. The Smith & Wesson Model 3914 is a 9mm single-stack, compact version of the Model 39 that features a manual slide safety/decocker, 3-white dot sights, and a Xenoy one-piece wrap-around grip.
