According to the factory letter: We received your letter of recent date in reference to one of our early revolvers. The model was introduced in 1881 and sold until 1913, with a total production of 54,668 revolvers.
The .44 Double Action First Model was designed to fire the .44 S&W Russian cartridge, which is no longer commercially available. It was manufactured in both blue and nickel, having the barrel lengths of 3 1/2, 4, 5, 6 and 6 1/2 inches.
We have researched your Smith & Wesson .44 Double Action First Model, caliber .44 S&W Russian, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number 47155, was shipped from our factory on February 15, 1905, and delivered to Marcus Hartley Co., New York City, NY. The records indicate that this revolver was sold with a 6.5 inch barrel, Nickel finish, and checkered black hard rubber grips. The pearl grips were probably added by the dealer.
