Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this scarce double-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Smith & Wesson .45 Hand Ejector U.S. Army Model of 1917 “Brazilian Contract!”

The Brazilian-contract Model 1917 revolvers were produced for the Brazilian government, with approximately 25,000 units made and stamped with the Brazilian crest on the sideplate, along with the year "1937." These revolvers feature a small S&W trademark on the left side of the frame, with "Made in USA" marked on the right side. They are typically equipped with a lanyard ring, serrated trigger, and a checked spur on the hammer. Most examples come with checkered wood grips that feature a large silver S&W medallion, although some are found with smooth wood grips. The hammer and trigger guard are marked with "REG. U.S. PAT. OFC." Patent dates are found on the top of the barrel, with "S&W D.A.45" on the left side of the barrel. Many of these Brazilian-marked Model 1917s were imported into the U.S. in 1990 and often bear an importer’s mark.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M1917 revolvers were six-shot, .45 ACP, large-frame double-action pistols adopted by the U.S. military in 1917 to supplement the M1911 semi-automatic pistol during World War I. Two versions of the M1917 were produced, one by Colt and the other by Smith & Wesson. Both models used moon clips to hold the rimless .45 ACP cartridges in place, facilitate reloading, and assist with extraction, as revolvers were originally designed for rimmed cartridges like those used in the M1911. After the war, the M1917 gained popularity among civilian shooters. To allow for easier use without moon clips, a commercial rimmed cartridge, the .45 Auto Rim, was developed, enabling the revolvers to eject cartridge cases without the need for moon clips. The Smith & Wesson M1917 is essentially a version of the company's .44 Hand Ejector 2nd Model, re-chambered for .45 ACP. It features a shortened cylinder and a lanyard ring on the butt of the frame. The S&W M1917 differs from the Colt version in that its cylinder has a shoulder machined into it to allow the rimless .45 ACP cartridges to headspace on the case mouth, similar to how they function in semi-automatic pistols. This allows the S&W M1917 to be used without moon clips, though empty .45 ACP cases must be manually ejected through the cylinder face, as the extractor star cannot engage them due to the rimless design of the cartridge.

The Brazilian-contract Model 1917 revolvers were produced for the Brazilian government, with approximately 25,000 units made and stamped with the Brazilian crest on the sideplate, along with the year "1937." A significant shipment in 1938 included most of the guns in serial number ranges 181983 to 207043, while a later shipment in 1946 covered serial numbers 207196 to 207989. A few earlier Brazilian-marked 1917s have been identified in serial number ranges such as 165910 to 169740. These revolvers feature a small S&W trademark on the left side of the frame, with "Made in USA" marked on the right side.
