Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The United States Military adopted the six-shot, .45 ACP, large frame M1917 Revolvers in 1917 to supplement the standard M1911 pistol during World War I. Two variations of the M1917 were made by Colt and Smith & Wesson. These revolvers used moon clips to hold the cartridges in position, aid in extraction, and facilitate reloading since revolvers were designed to eject rimmed cartridges, whereas .45 ACP rounds were rimless for use with the magazine-fed M1911. Civilian shooters also started using these revolvers after World War I, and a commercial-rimmed cartridge, the .45 Auto Rim, was developed to allow M1917 revolvers to eject cartridge cases without using moon clips.
The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 is a gun based on the company's .44 Hand Ejector 2nd Model. It is chambered in .45 ACP and has a shortened cylinder and a lanyard ring on the butt of its frame. The S&W version is different from the Colt version in that the S&W cylinder has a shoulder machined into it, which allows rimless .45 ACP cartridges to headspace on the case mouth, as they do in automatics. This means that the S&W Model 1917 can be used without half-moon clips. However, empty .45 ACP cases, being rimless, must be manually poked out through the cylinder face, as the extractor star cannot engage.
