The Smith & Wesson Model 4506 is a semi-automatic pistol belonging to the 4500 series of handguns, which is in its third generation. This pistol is chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge and can also accommodate the stronger .45 Super with special springs. The gun is made almost entirely of stainless steel, making it highly resistant to harsh weather conditions. The 4506 follows the traditional double-action/single-action mode of firing, where the first shot is fired in double-action mode and all subsequent shots are fired in single-action mode. It comes with one-piece Xenoy wrap-around grips with either a curved or straight back strap. The 4506 was produced between 1988 and 1999.
Like most 3rd generation Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistols, the 4506 comes with a combination safety lever and decocker mounted on the slide, a plunger type firing pin safety, a magazine disconnect, and a pin-mounted, pivoting spring actuated external extractor. The Smith & Wesson Model 4516 is a compact version of this pistol, with a 3 3⁄4" barrel on a smaller frame that accepts 7 round single column magazines.
