The Smith & Wesson Model 581, also known as the "Distinguished Service Magnum," was introduced in 1980 as a more specialized version of the Model 586 "Distinguished Combat Magnum," which featured adjustable sights. Unlike the 586, the Model 581 was equipped with non-adjustable fixed sights, making it less adjustable but more durable and simpler to use. A stainless steel variant of the 581, the Smith & Wesson Model 681, was also introduced in 1980. The Model 581 was renowned for its durability. It was constructed from high-quality carbon steel, which is ideal for law enforcement and civilian use. Its fixed sights and 4" full lug barrel contributed to its accuracy, making it a reliable choice for both target shooting and self-defense.
