The Smith & Wesson Model 586, is a six-shot double-action revolver chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge; it will also chamber and fire .38 Special cartridges. The Model 586 has a carbon steel construction and is available in a blued or nickel finish. Built upon the "L" frame with a full-lug barrel...it is essentially the same firearm as the Model 686, which has stainless steel construction. It is also known as the Distinguished Combat Magnum. The production of the S&W Model 586 marks the first use of 3 letter 4 digit serial numbering system starting with AAA0001 to AAA0094 and again from AAA790 to AAA2005 and AAA4868 to AAB2003 in June of 1980.
