Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 586 is a six- or seven-shot double-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, capable of also firing .38 Special and .38 Special +P cartridges. Constructed with carbon steel, the Model 586 is similar to the stainless steel Model 686 and is also known as the Distinguished Combat Magnum. It features a medium-sized 'L' frame with a K-frame grip and a larger diameter cylinder. Available in various barrel lengths ranging from 2.5 to 8.375 inches, the Model 586 was introduced in 1980 to address the shortcomings of the lighter K-frame revolvers, which were not durable enough for full-power .357 Magnum loads. The 586's heavier frame was designed for enhanced durability, making it popular with both law enforcement and sport shooters. The revolver is equipped with a target-style adjustable rear sight and was produced until 1999, then reintroduced in 2012 as the 586-8 variant with safety modifications and an improved yoke. The Model 586 became part of Smith & Wesson’s Classic line, offered in 4-inch and 6-inch barrel lengths. However, the company faced controversy in the late 1990s when it cooperated with the Clinton administration to implement an internal locking mechanism, which led to a boycott by many gun enthusiasts and a significant decline in stock price, nearly causing the company's bankruptcy.
