Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 586 is a robust and versatile double-action revolver, designed for users seeking both reliability and performance. Chambered for the powerful .357 Magnum, it is also capable of firing .38 Special and .38 Special +P cartridges, providing flexibility for both law enforcement and sporting applications. Constructed from carbon steel, the Model 586 is available in either a blued or nickel finish, offering both durability and aesthetic appeal. While it shares many of its features with the stainless steel Model 686, it stands out as part of the L-frame series, which was specifically developed to handle the powerful recoil of the .357 Magnum round. This frame, which incorporates a K-frame-sized grip mated to a larger cylinder, provides a sturdy yet manageable shooting experience. The 586 was offered with a variety of barrel lengths, from the compact 2+1/2 inches to the more extended 8+3/8 inches, making it adaptable for different uses, from concealed carry to target shooting and hunting. The adjustable target-style rear sight is another notable feature, enhancing the precision and accuracy of the revolver.

First introduced in 1980, the Model 586 was a significant step forward in Smith & Wesson's evolution of .357 Magnum revolvers, bridging the gap between the lighter, more compact K-frame guns and the heavier N-frame models. The L-frame, developed with input from S&W historian Roy Jinks, proved to be the ideal balance, offering enhanced durability while remaining comfortable for everyday carry and use. The Model 586 quickly gained popularity among law enforcement officers and hunters, who appreciated its ability to handle full-power .357 Magnum ammunition without the excessive recoil of lighter models. The revolver's reputation for strength and reliability, paired with its smooth action, contributed to its long-lasting impact on both the law enforcement and sporting communities. Although the Model 586 was discontinued in 1999, it was reintroduced in 2012 as the 586-8 variant, part of Smith & Wesson’s Classic line. This reintroduction included several modern safety improvements, making it a more user-friendly option while retaining the timeless features that made the original model so popular. Today, the Model 586 remains a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts, who appreciate its historical significance and enduring performance.
