Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in 1978, the Smith & Wesson Model 629 is a stainless steel version of the Model 29. At the time of its introduction, the Model 29 was the most powerful production handgun. However, it was later overtaken by handguns chambered for the even larger .454 Casull and .50 Action Express cartridges. It was made famous worldwide by association with the fictional character "Dirty Harry" Callahan. The 629 model designation derives from Smith & Wesson's practice of denoting a stainless steel version of one of their already existing designs by placing a 6 in front of the model number of the original weapon.
The Smith & Wesson Comped Hunter features a 6" barrel having a weaver integral base and fully adjustable micrometer click rear sight and dovetailed Millet orange ramp front sight, Comes with a removable 4 port compensator and a replacement muzzle to protect the crown when the comp is removed. Built on the N frame with a round butt and is fitted with Altamont wood grips. Unfluted cylinder with chambered charged holes and ball detent lock up. Flash chromed radiused .500" hammer, Flashed chromed and radiused .312" smooth combat trigger with overtravel stop. Stainless steel with glass bead finish. CMH serial prefix.
With these features, the 629-5 Comped Hunter product code 170126 featured a new frame for RSR in 1999!
