Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 639 is an upgraded version of the Model 39, a semi-automatic pistol that was initially used by military and law enforcement. Smith & Wesson's first-generation metal-frame semi-automatic pistols started with the Model 39, which was released to the civilian market in 1955. As more similar designs were created, the Model 39 became known as a "first generation" design. Second-generation models have three digits in their model number, while third-generation models have four digits. The second generation version of the Model 39 was known as the 439 and was released in 1980, followed by the 639, which was a 439 made entirely of stainless steel.
In 1989, the 439 was replaced by the third generation model, the 3904, which had its own stainless version, the 3906. The 3904 and 3906 were both discontinued in 1991, and the focus shifted to higher capacity double stack models like the 5906. This marked the end of the Smith & Wesson Model 39 family. The entire third generation was later discontinued in 1999 in favor of the cheaper Sigma line. The Smith & Wesson 639 is a traditional double-action 9x19mm caliber pistol with an eight-shot magazine and a 4-inch barrel. It was manufactured with both adjustable rear sights and fixed-sights. Early production models had a rounded trigger guard, while later production models had a squared trigger guard.
