Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 64 Military and Police revolver is a six-shot double-action revolver chambered in .38 Special. It is the stainless steel version of the Model 10 and was the second all-stainless steel revolver produced by Smith & Wesson, with the first being the Model 60. The Model 64 has fixed sights and was widely used by several U.S. police, sheriff, and state agencies. It was a popular choice in high-humidity states because the stainless steel Model 64 was more resistant to corrosion and rust than the blued Model 10.
Originally, the Model 64 was offered in two variants: a 4" taper barreled square butt or a 2" round butt. However, it has since been offered in numerous configurations. The 4" heavy barreled version, introduced in 1974, became a favorite with many police agencies. Notably, five variants were made for NYPD, which are marked "NY1" instead of the more common "NYCPD" marking for department-issued guns. These revolvers were intended to be purchased by individual officers. The Model 64 was one of the two stainless steel revolvers authorized for use by NYPD, with the other being the Ruger Service-Six. It was also one of the last revolvers approved for use, being replaced by 9mm semiautomatic pistols in 1993. The Model 64 is noted for its accuracy, dependability, and manageable recoil. It is still in use for security, inmate transportation (Corrections), target shooting, formal target competition, and personal defense.
