Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 642 is a double-action-only revolver chambered in .38 S&W Special and built on the round-butt alloy J-frame with three screws. Early production offered 2-inch and 3-inch barrel lengths and used a five-shot fluted cylinder measuring approximately 1.53 inches. These revolvers were fitted with a stainless-steel barrel and cylinder, a fully concealed hammer, a .312-inch smooth combat trigger, and fixed sights consisting of a 1/8-inch serrated ramp front and square-notch rear. Uncle Mike’s Boot grips were standard, though some examples were supplied with wood grips. Most early frames show the S&W logo stamped on the frame and laser-etched on the sideplate. Factory shipments included a sealed plastic kit containing a 4-inch straight handle, mop, and wire brush. Production ran from 1990 to 1992, with a total of 12,260 units manufactured before the model was discontinued in 1992. The Model 642 was reintroduced in 1996 on the strengthened J-Magnum frame, still with three screws and now rated for +P ammunition. This updated hammerless Centennial incorporated a slightly larger alloy frame, a stainless-steel cylinder, a floating firing pin, and a cylinder stop machined directly into the frame. The finish was a frosted satin alloy, and “Airweight” was laser-engraved on the sideplate, accompanied by S&W trademarks on both the frame and plate. Several cosmetically imperfect revolvers were overstamped or renumbered “042” and finished in Flat Blue or Polished Blue.
