Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 642 is a double-action-only revolver chambered in .38 S&W Special and built on the round-butt alloy J-frame with three screws. Early production offered 2-inch and 3-inch barrel lengths and used a five-shot fluted cylinder measuring approximately 1.53 inches. These revolvers were fitted with a stainless-steel barrel and cylinder, a fully concealed hammer, a .312-inch smooth combat trigger, and fixed sights consisting of a 1/8-inch serrated ramp front and square-notch rear. Uncle Mike’s Boot grips were standard, though some examples were supplied with wood grips. Most early frames show the S&W logo stamped on the frame and laser-etched on the sideplate. Factory shipments included a sealed plastic kit containing a 4-inch straight handle, mop, and wire brush. Production ran from 1990 to 1992, with a total of 12,260 units manufactured before the model was discontinued in 1992. The Model 642 was reintroduced in 1996 on the strengthened J-Magnum frame, still with three screws and now rated for +P ammunition. This updated hammerless Centennial incorporated a slightly larger alloy frame, a stainless-steel cylinder, a floating firing pin, and a cylinder stop machined directly into the frame. The finish was a frosted satin alloy, and “Airweight” was laser-engraved on the sideplate, accompanied by S&W trademarks on both the frame and plate. Several cosmetically imperfect revolvers were overstamped or renumbered “042” and finished in Flat Blue or Polished Blue.

Standard features included Uncle Mike’s Boot grips, a .312-inch smooth trigger, a flat-faced internal hammer, fixed sights, and a five-shot fluted cylinder lengthened to approximately 1.59 inches. The updated model used the revised MIM-style thumbpiece, weighed about 15.8 ounces, and had an actual barrel length of 1.86 inches. The cylinder window was enlarged to 1.345 by 1.732 inches. A LadySmith version was also produced, featuring “LadySmith” laser-engraved on the sideplate in place of “Airweight”, fitted with ACE-made rosewood-laminate wood grips, and packaged in a LadySmith-marked soft zipper case. The Smith & Wesson 642 Airweight represents the first revolver to be offered in a LadySmith variant. Various distributors also offered Magna-Ported models. Overall production spans the original 1990–1992 run and the 1996–2015 reintroduction period.
