The medium-size rimfire Smith & Wesson 648 8-round .22 WMR is a satin-finished stainless-steel revolver mated to a black polymer grip. The barrel is an imposing 6” long. This single-action/double-action (SA/DA) gun’s overall length is 11.13”, and it weighs 46.6 ounces (2.9 pounds). This is the gun’s only standard configuration.
In front is a solid black Patridge sight pinned atop a trapezoid base while the rear sight is adjustable. The frame, fluted cylinder and long barrel are all high strength stainless-steel that has a nice satin finish. The grip is extended back with three nice finger recesses along the front and an undercut at the back of the trigger guard. The black polymer grip contrasts nicely against the stainless-steel. It has an oval texture pattern for assured grip. The Model 648 is a Smith & Wesson K-frame revolver. This series has existed in various guises for over 100 years. Thus, the inescapable gravity of the classic lines and harmonious proportions isn’t surprising. And with Smith & Wesson’s experience, fit and finish are spectacular.
The barrel top is anti-glare serrated along its length. The hammer spur is checkered. The gun also has a transfer bar safety. This is always a nice feature that nearly ensures if gun won’t discharge if dropped. Until the trigger is pulled, the hammer and firing pin remain separated. When the trigger is pulled, the transfer bar swings up between the hammer and firing pin permitting the hammer pin to hit the transfer bar, which hits the firing pin. Bang!
