Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 57 is a large-frame, double-action revolver chambered for the .41 Magnum cartridge, designed initially for law enforcement use but gaining more popularity with civilian target shooters and hunters due to its size and recoil. Introduced in April 1964, the Model 57 was developed in response to the efforts of firearms experts Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan, and Skeeter Skelton, who lobbied for a new .41 caliber cartridge to fill a perceived performance gap between the .357 and .44 Magnum. Remington responded by launching the .41 Magnum cartridge, and Smith & Wesson followed with the Model 57 revolver. The Model 57 is built on the company's "N" frame, the same frame used in the iconic Model 29 but chambered for the .41 Magnum rather than the .44 Magnum. Available with barrel lengths of 4", 6", 6.5", and 8.375" and offered in both blued and nickel finishes, the Model 57 was known for its superb fit, finish, and performance. Like the Model 29, it featured a red insert front sight, adjustable rear sights, a target trigger, a target hammer, and oversized wooden target grips. In 1986, Smith & Wesson introduced the all-stainless steel Model 657 as a variant of the Model 57, expanding its appeal and solidifying the revolver's place in the company's legacy of high-performance firearms.
