Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 686, known as the Stainless-Steel Distinguished Combat Magnum, was first introduced in 1981 in response to growing demand from law enforcement and sportsmen for a more manageable, yet powerful, revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. The Model 686 was built on the L-frame, a new frame size at the time, which combined the size and strength of the K-frame grip with the added durability needed to handle the full recoil of Magnum loads. This heavier frame made the 686 more controllable, offering a better shooting experience even with full-power ammunition. As the first model assigned to Smith & Wesson’s new serial number series, the Model 686 began with the serial number AAA0095, and its serials would continue through all variations of the L-frame models (including the 586, 581, and 681), marking it as a significant step in Smith & Wesson's revolver evolution.

One of the most distinctive variations of the Model 686 is the Midnight Black model, introduced in 1988 to test the popularity of a blackened finish. These revolvers were manufactured in both four-inch and six-inch barrel lengths, and offered a unique, sleek look with their special black finish and high-quality components. The Midnight Black Model 686 was available in limited quantities, with only 1559 units featuring the four-inch barrel and 2876 units with the six-inch barrel. One notable example, a Model 686-3, was shipped from the factory in January 1989 to Fishman’s Sporting Goods in Girard, Illinois, with the serial number BBL2940. This variation, in addition to its distinctive black finish, came equipped with a 6-inch barrel, a red ramp front sight, and a white outline rear sight for enhanced accuracy. The revolver was further enhanced with Goncalo Alves target grips, which provided both a premium feel and better control. The Model 686 Midnight Black was a significant and sought-after model, contributing to the 686's reputation for both performance and durability and solidifying its place as a favorite among shooters.
