Throughout its history, the Model 686 has seen a variety of iterations. The Model 686 Classic Hunter, unveiled in 1988, boasts a 6-inch barrel and a non-fluted cylinder. In 1989, the Model 686 Black Stainless was introduced, offering either a 4 or 6-inch barrel with a sleek black finish, with production limited to 5000 units. The Model 686 National Security Special, which hit the market in 1992, featured a 3 or 4-inch barrel, while in the same year, the Model 686 Target Champion made its debut with a 6-inch match-grade barrel, adjustable trigger stop, and elegant walnut grips. Following suit in 1994, the Model 686 Power Port was revealed, featuring a ported 6-inch barrel. Finally, the Model 686 Plus, released in 1996, offered barrel options of 2.5, 3, 4, 6, 64, 76, or 102 inches, along with adjustable sights, a 7-shot cylinder, and Hogue rubber grips.
