Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 686 is a versatile double-action revolver known for its reliability and performance. It is designed to hold either six or seven shots and is chambered for the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge while also accommodating .38 Special cartridges. Since its introduction by Smith & Wesson in 1981, the Model 686 has gained a reputation as a beloved choice for both collectors and shooting enthusiasts. It comes in various standard barrel lengths, including 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 inches, but can also be customized with other barrel lengths through S&W's Performance Center custom shop or by after-market gunsmiths.

Throughout its history, the Model 686 has seen a variety of iterations. The Model 686 Classic Hunter, unveiled in 1988, boasts a 6-inch barrel and a non-fluted cylinder. In 1989, the Model 686 Black Stainless was introduced, offering either a 4 or 6-inch barrel with a sleek black finish, with production limited to 5000 units. The Model 686 National Security Special, which hit the market in 1992, featured a 3 or 4-inch barrel, while in the same year, the Model 686 Target Champion made its debut with a 6-inch match-grade barrel, adjustable trigger stop, and elegant walnut grips. Following suit in 1994, the Model 686 Power Port was revealed, featuring a ported 6-inch barrel. Finally, the Model 686 Plus, released in 1996, offered barrel options of 2.5, 3, 4, 6, 64, 76, or 102 inches, along with adjustable sights, a 7-shot cylinder, and Hogue rubber grips.
