Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 686 is a versatile double-action revolver chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge, though it can also fire .38 Special rounds. Introduced in 1981, the Model 686 is the stainless steel version of the earlier Model 586, which featured a blued steel finish. The revolver is available with either a 6- or 7-round cylinder and can be found in both ported and unported configurations, offering flexibility for different shooting needs. The Model 686 is built on Smith & Wesson's L-frame, a medium-sized frame designed to handle the powerful .357 Magnum round with durability and precision.

As part of Smith & Wesson's L-frame series, the Model 686 was developed alongside other .357 Magnum models like the 581, 586, and 681. While the 581 and 681 feature fixed sights, the 586 and 686 come equipped with adjustable sights for improved accuracy. Over the years, the Model 686 has been offered with various barrel lengths, ranging from 2.5 to 8 inches, with custom lengths available through Smith & Wesson's Performance Center or aftermarket gunsmiths. The 686 has also been made in several variants, including the 686P (also known as the Model 686 Plus), which features a 7-round cylinder, and the 686PP, which incorporates an integral PowerPort compensator (muzzle brake) for reduced recoil. The revolver has been offered with both "square butt" and "round butt" grip options, and grips can be easily swapped out with a variety of aftermarket choices. Initially, the Model 686 came with Goncalo Alves hardwood grips, but by 1994, these were replaced by Hogue rubber grips for improved comfort and control. The revolver's adjustable rear sight, along with optional front sight adjustments on certain models, makes it an excellent choice for both target shooting and self-defense.
