Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Smith & Wesson tried to enter the shotgun market with the 916 series. Unfortunately it had inherent design flaws and was subject to breakage. It wasn't S&W's original design, but derived from designs acquired from the Noble Manufacturing company. It was contract built overseas and was held in low regard by not only police departments but writers for various gun publications. Smith & Wesson built the 916 (sportsman version), the 916A (riot version) and the 916T (takedown version). 916 and 916A shotguns are seen with both bead and rifle sights and many long barreled 916 and 916A shotguns were cut down to 18-20" barrels for riot use. The 916T has a barrel connector that looks more like a High Standard 1200 FLITE KING series shotgun and many 916T shotguns have long (28" or more) barrels for sporting use. Production of the 916 ended in 1980 and was followed by the more highly-thought of Model 3000.
Here's why the Model 916 pumps up the value of your shotgun dollar. As an all around shotgun, the S&W Model 916 pump gives you top dollar value. Here's a basic shotgun for a lifetime of hunting seasons. All kinds of hunting. Doves, ducks, or deer. The model 916 feels right, swings easy, points naturally. With an easy, smooth shucking pump action, and its S&W dependable.
Available in a 12 and 20 gauge, the Model 916 offers a full selection of models, barrel lengths and chokes. Chambered for 3" Magnum shells to meet the needs of duck hunters, it operates just as dependably with standard 2 3/4" shells.
The barrel, precision machined form ordinance grade steel. Reamed to gauge and choked for optimun shot pattern. And you don't have to worry about steel shot. The 916 successfully passed a thorough testing program including extremely high proof pressure and endurance with commercial steel shot loaded in accordance with recommendations of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute. The receiver, machined from a solid block of ordinance grade steel. Hardened at critical lock areas for added strength and longer wear. The bolt, engineered for jam-free extractor engages the shell base with a positive grip that gets stronger as the shell is pulled from the chamber. Stock and forend are hand sculptured out of finely grained, walnut finished hardwood with ventilated recoil pad if you want.
