Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson First Model Single Shot, also known as the Single Shot Model of 1891, represents Smith & Wesson’s earliest dedicated target pistol and an important transitional design in the company’s late-19th-century product line. Introduced in 1893 and manufactured through 1905, the Model of 1891 was built on the same basic frame as the S&W Model 1891 revolver but reconfigured as a precision, tip-up, single-shot pistol intended for the growing American target-shooting market. It incorporated a rebounding hammer, a frame-mounted latch, and interchangeable barrels—features that allowed shooters to tailor the gun for formal competition. These pistols were chambered primarily in .22, .32, and .38 Single Shot calibers, reflecting the period’s emphasis on accuracy-focused, low-recoil target rounds. Collectibility today is driven by both the model’s historical role and its relatively limited production. The First Model Single Shot spawned a full lineage of improved S&W single-shot target pistols that would eventually evolve into the famed .22 target autos of the 20th century, giving it significant developmental importance. Surviving examples often show a high level of hand-fitting and early S&W craftsmanship, especially in the finely machined barrels and crisp trigger pulls. Condition, barrel length, and matching-number components strongly influence value, as do rarer calibers or early production ranges. For collectors of early American target pistols or Smith & Wesson’s formative designs, the Model of 1891 stands as a foundational and historically meaningful piece.
