Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .32-20 Hand Ejector 1st Model is a double/single-action revolver chambered for the .32-20 Winchester cartridge, built on the round-butt K-frame in the early four-screw configuration. It was offered with 4-, 5-, 6-, and 6 1/2-inch round pinned barrels and finished in either blue or nickel. The First Model is distinguished by the absence of a locking lug beneath the barrel. Standard service sights consisted of a round-blade front sight paired with a square-notch rear sight, while target models used a square-cut blade mounted and pinned in a raised boss with an adjustable rear sight mounted directly in the top strap. Grips were checkered black hard rubber with the S&W monogram or checkered walnut without a monogram. The revolver used a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56 inches. Barrel markings typically read “32 Winchester CTG” on the left side. Serial numbers were normally applied to the butt, cylinder face, yoke, barrel flat, and the area behind the extractor star.
A smooth trigger and checkered hammer spur were standard. This model also features a spring-loaded yoke-stop pin, located inside the yoke, to help maintain the cylinder's open position—generally visible only when the yoke is removed. The S&W trademark is stamped on the sideplate. Manufactured from approximately 1899 to 1902, the 1st Model ran from serial number 1 through 5311, with a total production of 5,311 revolvers.
