Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
A Smith & Wesson, Model No. 1 1/2, second issue, tip-up, revolver. This is a 5 shot, spur trigger, with a fluted cylinder and birdshead shaped rosewood grips. The barrel address reads ”*SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. PAT. APR. 3. 55 JULY 5. 59 & NOV. 21. 65*”. The serial number is stamped on the butt of the gripstrap.
The second issue of the Model 1 1⁄2 can be identified by its fluted barrel and the rounded shape of the grip butt. Like the 1st Issue, it was also produced in blued steel and nickel-plated varieties, with most models having a 3 1⁄2-inch barrel. It is estimated that less than a thousand models were produced with a 2 1⁄2-inch barrel; these can be positively identified by the barrel markings located on the side of the barrel, as opposed to the markings on the top strap that were applied to 3 1⁄2-inch barrels.
2nd Issue guns were serial numbered consecutively after the 1st Issue, with numbers ranging from approximately 26,300 through 127,000.
Louis Daniel Nimschke (July 4, 1832 – April 29, 1904) was a master firearms engraver of the 19th century who engraved over 5,000 firearms between 1850 and 1904 for Colt's Patent Fire Arms Co., Winchester, Remington, Sharps, Smith & Wesson, Henry, Manhattan Arms, Marlin Firearms and Stevens Arms.
Unlike most engravers of the 19th century who worked directly for firearms manufacturers, Nimschke maintained his own shop in New York City and took work on a contractual basis. His main client was New York outfitter Schuyler, Hartley and Graham. When a special custom order that required utmost detail needed to be filled the firearms companies would commission Nimschke for the work.
Many engravers emulated his style, which has become known today as "Nimschke School" or "New York Style" of engraving.
