Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 1000 is a semi-automatic shotgun produced from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, manufactured in Japan by Howa Machinery and imported by Smith & Wesson. Available in 12- or 20-gauge, the Model 1000 was offered with a 2 3/4-inch chamber for standard loads or a 3-inch magnum chamber in the 12-gauge variant. It utilized a gas-operated action known for smooth cycling and notably low recoil, making it suitable for extended use in field or sport shooting. Shotguns with standard chambers were built on a lightweight alloy receiver, while magnum models featured a steel receiver for added strength. A cross-bolt safety was standard, and barrels were available in several lengths and choke configurations, including 26-inch barrels with skeet or improved cylinder chokes, 28-inch barrels with modified cylinder chokes, and 28- or 30-inch barrels with modified or full chokes.

A “Multi-Choke” barrel with interchangeable choke tubes—Improved Cylinder, Modified, or Full—was also offered, achieved by increasing the wall thickness at the muzzle end without altering the rest of the barrel’s profile. All barrels featured a ventilated rib, and the shotgun’s typical weight was around 7 1/2 pounds. Though eventually overshadowed by more commercially dominant models, the Model 1000 remains respected for Smith & Wesson's venture into the long gun market.
