Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 1000 is a semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun that showcases the brand’s lesser-known but highly capable venture into the world of sporting arms. Manufactured by Howa Machinery in Japan and imported by Smith & Wesson during the 1970s and 1980s, the Model 1000 reflects the high standards of craftsmanship typical of Japanese firearms of that era. This particular example features a 28-inch vent ribbed barrel chambered for 3-inch shells, offering flexibility for everything from upland game to waterfowl. The deep blued finish on the barrel and receiver adds a rich, classic aesthetic, while the silver front bead sight ensures quick and intuitive target acquisition in the field or at the range.

The checkered walnut stock and forearm are finely crafted and elegantly finished, giving the Model 1000 a distinctly upscale appearance that’s matched by its smooth operation and balanced handling. The wood-to-metal fit is tight and clean, and the sharply cut checkering offers both beauty and function, providing a confident grip in any shooting scenario. Internally, the gas-operated action is known for its reliability and relatively soft recoil—especially important for those long days on the clays course or in the dove field. Despite being overshadowed by Smith & Wesson’s reputation for handguns, the Model 1000 stands as a testament to the company’s ability to produce a refined and effective shotgun. Whether appreciated as a collectible, a field-ready gun, or both, the S&W Model 1000 remains a classic sleeper in the world of vintage autoloaders.
