Developed with the goal of creating a precision firearm for target shooters, it features a grip angle of 105 degrees, mirroring the Colt M1911's design, to ensure a consistent and comfortable grip. This ergonomic consideration, alongside its precision engineering, helped the Model 41 gain a reputation for accuracy and reliability. Prototypes were tested and refined over a decade, with the pistol officially entering production in 1957. In the early years, the Model 41 was well-received for its high-quality construction and accuracy, quickly becoming a popular choice among competitive shooters. By the end of 1958, Smith & Wesson had produced nearly 10,000 units, and the Model 41’s popularity continued to grow throughout the 1960s, with various barrel lengths introduced to cater to different competitive shooting disciplines.

The 1960s also saw the introduction of heavier barrel options, including the 7 3/8-inch Olympic-style barrel designed for adding center weights, and later, the 7-inch barrel without a muzzle brake. Despite its success, the Model 41 was discontinued in 1992, only to be reintroduced in 1994 as the "New Model" with updates to design and production. Over its long production history, the Model 41 earned a reputation for being a finely-tuned, versatile target pistol, prized by shooters for its superior accuracy and smooth operation. Today, the Model 41 remains a beloved firearm among competitive marksmen and collectors alike, a testament to Smith & Wesson's commitment to precision and innovation in handgun design.
