Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 46 was developed as a "no frills" version of the Model 41 for the AMU (Army Marksman Unit) and Air Force shooting team in 1959 and is very similar in appearance to the Model 41. About 4000 units were made in total: 2500 with a 7-inch barrel, 1000 with 5-inch barrels, and 500 with 5 1⁄2-inch barrels. The serial range was between 22,000 and 98,000. The Model 46 lacks the fine blue finish or the extensive machining, and nicely finished round cuts of the Model 41. The Model 46 also had less serrated parts and cosmetic machining. Also missing on the Model 46 is the cocking indicator. The Model 46 barrels are similar to the Model 41 barrels, with less machining, noticeably missing is the slide cut. Due to the lack of slide cut, the Model 46 slide has a narrower rail. A Model 41 slide cannot be used on the Model 46 barrel, however a Model 46 slide will fit on a Model 41 barrel, leaving the barrel slide cut exposed. The Model 41 slide and barrel assembly can be used on a Model 46 also the reverse. However, a Model 46 barrel will not fit into the slide of a Model 41. It proved to be a commercial failure with consumers who preferred the more costly Model 41, and production ceased in 1968.
