Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 59, introduced in 1971, is a historically significant semi-automatic pistol that marked a departure from the company's earlier designs, most notably the Model 39. A direct descendant of the Model 39, the Model 59 was developed to meet the needs of military and law enforcement for a larger capacity 9mm pistol. It incorporated a 14-round staggered magazine, a notable upgrade over the 8-round single-stack magazine used in the Model 39, significantly enhancing its firepower. The pistol’s design was tailored for the U.S. Navy, who sought a larger-capacity version of the Model 39, which had previously served as the basis for the Navy's suppressed "Mark 22 Hush Puppy" pistol. Although it was never officially adopted by the Navy, the Model 59 nonetheless entered the civilian market in the early 1970s, where it gained a solid reputation.

Constructed with a blue-finished carbon steel slide and an anodized aluminum frame, the Model 59 balanced durability with relatively lightweight for its class. The pistol features a 4" barrel and is equipped with a serrated ramp front sight paired with an adjustable square notch rear sight, allowing for precise aiming. The checkered black synthetic grips, embossed with the Smith & Wesson monogram, provide a secure and comfortable hold. One of the unique features of the Model 59 is its magazine disconnect mechanism, preventing the weapon from firing unless the magazine is inserted. The trigger operates in both double- and single-action modes, giving the shooter flexibility in use. Though production ceased in 1982, with approximately 231,841 units produced, the Model 59 is still remembered for its rugged design and contributions to the evolution of modern semi-automatic pistols, influencing later models such as the S&W Model 459.
