The Smith & Wesson Model 59 is a watershed American “wonder-nine” — a 9×19mm, double-action/single-action, high-capacity semi-automatic that grafted a wider, anodized aluminum frame to the proven single-stack Model 39 design so it could accept a staggered double-column magazine. Introduced commercially in 1971, the M59 carried a factory 14-round magazine (and later magazines and variants pushed capacities higher), a roughly 4-inch barrel, a blued carbon-steel slide, and a grip built from three-piece molded panels with a metal backstrap; these features made it one of the first domestic pistols to combine a true service-size frame with large magazine capacity.
