Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .35 Semi-automatic Pistol (aka the Model of 1913) is a 35 S&W Auto chambered pistol that comes with a 7-shot magazine, a 3-1/2" barrel, fixed sights, blue or nickel finish, smooth plain walnut grips with eight variations produced. The most noteworthy being the magazine release. The original release operated from side to side with the second style operating front to back engaging the magazine itself. This change occurred between serial number 3000 and 3149. This model has a grip and a manual safety, but has no magazine disconnect safety. Marked "35 S&W AUTO CTG" on the barrels left side with the S&W trademark on the rear of the frame above the safety slide button. Serial number range 1-8350 During its nine years of production at least eight variations were produced as outlined below, and perhaps many more depending how they are defined. The first pistols had a slotted recoil spring guide rod, this feature was dropped early in production, however, they show up randomly over the first 1000 guns.

The 1st Type featured a front safety that pushes directly to the rear to fire. The 2nd type featured a front safety must be pushed to the rear and to the left to fire. The change seems to have been incorporated on all guns by serial number 250. The 3rd Type featured a forward safety that reverts back to the original function. The change over may have been completed by serial number 2000. The 4th type featured a magazine catch that was changed from side to side operation to front to back operation. This change was completed by serial number 3150. The 5th Type changed the location of the recoil spring retaining pin which was moved from below to above the guide tunnel. The spring is made heavier. Disconnect cross bolt is enlarged. Not all of these changes took place at the same time, however, they were all incorporated by serial number 4000.

The 6th Type featured a breech bolt assembly and the recoil spring guide tunnel were changed from round to square, thesides of the breechblock were extended downward to overlap the frame thus eliminating the guide block. The changes were complete by serial number 6600. The 7th Type elimated the Smith & Wesson trademark stamping by serial number 6600. The 8th Type featured "35 S&W AUTO. CTG." markings on the left side of the barrel were moved to the right side and "SMITH & WESSON" was added to the left side. This change was completed by serial number 7500. Manufactured circa 1913-1921.
