Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield returned 125 years after its original production in 1875. This classic American firearms is considered by many to have been the best revolver available in the American Frontier.
The Model 3 Schofield is a unique revolver and an example if a product being shaped by its intended application, true form follows function. It was designed by Cavalry officer Brevet Lieutenant Colonel George W. Schofield for fast and easy use while astride a galloping horse. Schofield received a Smith & Wesson Model 3 in 1871 and while serving with the 10th Cavalry on the Western Frontier determined that he could improve upon the design so the handgun would be better suited for the use by the cavalry soldiers.
Colonel Schofield began discussions with Smith & Wesson on production of his newly patented design. His improvement to the Smith & Wesson Model 3 top break allowed the Horse Soldier to unload and reload the revolver with one hand in just 26 seconds. This was accomplished by moving the barrel latch from the barrel to the frame, allowing the revolver to be opened by pulling the barrel latch back with the thumb of the shooting hand. The barrel could then be rotated downward, extracting all the spent cartridges and making the revolver ready for reloading.
The United States Military accepted Colonel Schofield's design in 1874 and Smith & Wesson began production. The first 3000 Model 3 Schofield's were delivered to the National Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts on July 12, 1875. The revolvers were immediately issued to cavalry units for the use on the Western Frontier.
The speed with which this revolver could function led several military leaders to express the opinion that if the 7th Cavalry under Custer's command had been armed with the Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield the results of the battle may have been differed. military trials at the time showed that the Smith & Wesson could be loaded, fired and reloaded seven times in the same amount of time it took to unload and reload the Colt Single Action Army, the issue revolver of the 7th Cavalry.
Smith & Wesson ceased production of the Model 3 Schofield in 1879. A total of 8,969 guns had been sold through military and commercial markets. It was only then, in the last 20 years, that historians came to recognize what Colonel Schofield has instinctively understood the first time he held the Smith & Wesson Model 3 Schofield in his hand- it was the best revolver invented for the Horse Soldier.
125 years later, Smith & Wesson reintroduced the Schofield. The Schofield Model of 2000 is a modern top-break, single action from the Smith & Wesson Performance Center. It features the design concepts of the original Model 3 Schofield and incorporates the technical and engineering advantages the intervening 125 years had made possible. With its 7" barrel, blue finish and walnut grips the Schofield Model of 2000 is a modern classic!
